Provincial Art Collections

The Government of Alberta recognizes the arts sector as an essential part of the Albertan quality of life.

The Alberta Foundation for the Arts (AFA), a crown agency, sees an Alberta where vibrant arts communities inspire creativity and innovation and is part of the fabric of how we live and work.

The AFA funds, encourages, and supports the development of arts in Alberta, while maintaining and expanding the AFA art collection as a resource for all Albertans.

Since 1972, the AFA and its predecessor foundation, the Alberta Art Foundation, have collected and managed a wide range of artwork that continues to grow and expand. Works from this collection are exhibited and showcased locally, provincially and nationally.

The management of the AFA Art Collection is detailed in both the AFA Collection Framework and Policy Manual and the Collection Development Plan.

We encourage you to explore AFA Art House, which houses digital images of nearly every artwork in the AFA Art Collection. The AFA Art House is Canada's first member of the extended eMuseum network, which includes globally recognized institutions such as New York's Museum of Modern Art.
