Fundamentals Workshops

Fundamentals Workshops are designed to give board members an opportunity to work together to improve the governance of their organization. This gives boards an opportunity to use their own materials and develop an action plan for the future.

Arrangements

  • All arrangements for workshops are handled by the Board Development Program's professional staff. This includes all necessary travel and accommodation arrangements for its instructors.
  • Boards should explore potential workshop dates at least six to eight weeks prior to a desired date. This allows the staff time to collect the necessary background information and to schedule and prepare Volunteer Instructors.
  • The organization is responsible for providing the meeting place, basic audio-visual equipment (LCD projector and computer or overhead projector, screen and two flipcharts) and refreshments.
  • Volunteer Instructors will be in touch with the board to customize the workshop content.
  • Follow-up contact is made by one of the instructors four to six months after a workshop.

Format

  • A Fundamentals Workshop is 10 hours long, generally held on a Friday, 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM and Saturday, 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM
  • Workshops are presented on weekends, September through June

Delivery

  • BDP workshops are delivered by Volunteer Instructors, who have significant board experience and who have received specialized training related to board governance

Attendance

  • To optimize the board member participation and results of the workshop, attendance of 75% of board members is expected at the workshop. (Smaller boards of 8 members or less are requested to have 100% of board members present.)
  • The senior staff person is invited to attend
