Open Workshops

Open workshops provide an opportunity for individual board volunteers from a variety of organizations to learn how they can contribute to effective board governance and share ideas that have been proven successful with other boards.

Arrangements

The host organization (sponsor) is responsible for the following:

  • Publicizing the workshop within their community through appropriate print and electronic media.
  • Registering the participants.
  • Returning completed participant registration forms to the Board Development Program office two weeks in advance of the workshop.
  • Arranging for a suitable facility, beverages, lunch, snacks, basic audio-visual equipment (LCD projector and computer or overhead projector, screen and two flipcharts). Host organizations may charge a fee to participants to cover these costs.

Sponsors

  • An Open Workshop can be sponsored by any organization on behalf of the larger community.

Format

  • Open Workshops are held in two different formats:
    • Friday evening (7:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.) and Saturdays (9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.) or
    • Saturday (8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.)

Delivery

Board Development Program workshops are:
  • Of interest to not-for-profit organizations registered under various legislation, including the Societies Act and Libraries Act in Alberta
  • Available across the province
  • Offered during weekends during September through June (long weekends excluded)
  • BDP workshops are delivered by volunteer instructors, who have significant board experience and who have received specialized training related to board governance

Attendance

  • Members of the public are welcome
  • Minimum registration is 10, maximum is 25
  • Open Workshops are of interest to those desiring general information about board governance, including both board members and staff of not-for-profit organizations.
