The History of National Volunteer Week

National Volunteer Week was first proclaimed in Canada in 1943. Women's Voluntary Services in Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg and Vancouver organized special events to draw the public's attention to the vital contribution women made to the war efforts on the home front.

In the late 1960s, the idea of a designated week to honour volunteers was revived, and focus was broadened to include all community volunteers. During the 1970s and 1980s this special week grew in importance with local volunteer centres.

In 1990, the third week in April was proclaimed National Volunteer Week in all communities across the country. This week is now firmly established as the highlight of the year for paying tribute to Canada's volunteers.

Local, regional, national and international events are held throughout the week to increase awareness of the important role of volunteers and nonprofit/voluntary sector and to encourage volunteerism in our communities.
