New chair and vice-chair for Premier's Council on Arts and Culture
A chair and vice-chair have been named for Alberta's new Premier's Council on Arts and Culture.
The chair of the council is Theatre Calgary CEO Tom McCabe, of Calgary. Tom has been a member and chair of numerous community boards including the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Theatre Calgary, Bow Valley College and the Calgary Zoo. His position as chair on the Premier's Council is effective immediately.
Angela Keibel of Drumheller has been named vice-chair. Angela, a current student whose studies include executive leadership in the non-profit sector, has tremendous volunteer experience and has sat on many community non-profit boards. The vice-chair position is also effective immediately.
Tom and Angela are among the eleven inspiring Albertans who were recently appointed to the new Premier's Council on Arts and Culture. These dedicated leaders, along with other council members will advise on the implementation of The Spirit of Alberta. They will set in place objectives and tasks to carry out the mandate of the council and oversee all council initiatives.
Council members are responsible for acting as liaisons between the cultural community and government, facilitating partnerships that strengthen and preserve Alberta's culture, and provide advice on initiatives designed to help achieve the four goals of The Spirit of Alberta: access, capacity, excellence and cultural industries.
The Spirit of Alberta provides a framework for decision-making related to the support, growth and development of culture. The policy broadly defines culture to include the arts, our heritage, the natural environment and recreation. Council members were selected based on their knowledge and expertise in these areas.
