Crowfoot Library Reflects on Alberta Arts Days 2010

Alberta’s libraries serve as important resources for Albertans to learn and discover the arts and culture beyond literary arts.  From cities to rural communities, libraries have served as a great venue to host Alberta Arts Days events during the past three years.

In 2010, Calgary’s Crowfoot Library continued their involvement in Alberta Arts Days by planning diverse events and activities for people of all ages and interests.  “In 2010, we developed programming on the Sunday of Alberta Arts Days weekend to offer a  high-impact day of events and activities,” said Allison Inglis, Customer Service Manager with Crowfoot Library.

The day started off with performances from past winners of the Hones International Piano Competition.  Next, the Honourable Lindsay Blackett, Minister of Culture and Community Spirit, dropped in to read for children during an Afternoon Story Time session.

A partnership was formed with the Art Gallery of Calgary and an exhibition featuring the works of Claude Monet was displayed.  Finally, community art displays and demonstrations were made available throughout the day and included participation from the Alberta Handicrafts Guild, Bow Valley Calligraphy Guild, East Indian Folk Art, Jubilations Dinner Theatre and the North Mount Pleasant Arts Centre.

“The interactive demonstrations and performances became a focal point for visitors to our library that day,” said Inglis, “and hosting Alberta Arts Days events helped our community members feel a bit more connected with the Government of Alberta’s goals to spotlight the arts and culture during Alberta Arts Days weekend.”

As event planners across the province gear up for Alberta Arts Days 2011, Crowfoot Library will continue to be involved in this province-wide celebration in some capacity.

“For those considering getting involved in Alberta Arts Days 2011, I would encourage event planners to include events and activities for all different age groups and try to include some sort of performance or interactive demonstration,” said Inglis.

Alberta Arts Days 2011 will occur from September 30 to October 2, in celebration of National Culture Days.  Check out the Alberta Culture Calendar throughout the summer for event listings in your community at http://culture.alberta.ca/events/default.aspx.
