Historic Resource Conservation Grants
Historic Resource Conservation grants provide project funding for:
- Conservation of Alberta's historic places
- Architectural and/or engineering services, studies reports or plans associated with the conservation of the historic place
Matching grants are awarded up to 50% of eligible costs.
Conservation
Conservation includes actions or processes that safeguard character-defining elements of a historic place to retain the heritage value and extend physical life. This may involve one or more conservation treatments—preservation, rehabilitation or restoration.
The maximum matching grants per application per year are as follows:
- Provincial Historic Resources – $100,000
- Municipal Historic Resources – $50,000
- Local (non-designated) Historic Resources – one-time grant of $5,000
A non-designated cemetery may qualify for a maximum matching grant of $5,000 if the cemetery:
- Is associated with a significant historic event.
- Contains graves of significant provincial or national figures.
- Contains distinctive historic landscapes or grave architecture.
- Demonstrates or yields important information related to distinctive mortuary or burial practices.
Architectural and Engineering Services, Studies, Reports or Plans
Funding up to a maximum grant of $25,000 is available for architectural and/or engineering services, studies, reports or plans associated with the conservation of a historic place.
Requirements
The application must include contractor's estimates for proposed work.
Only one application for conservation and one application for architectural and engineering services, study or report per historic resource per calendar year will be accepted.
Completed work must comply with the Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada and approved by a Heritage Conservation Adviser.
Retroactive funding may be available for work completed up to a year prior to application deadline. Review guidelines in the Heritage Preservation Partnership Program Guidelines below.
Consult with a Heritage Conservation Adviser early in the process to align with standards and guidelines. This helps with determining eligible project costs and funding requests.
