Aboriginal Consultation

The Historic Resources Management Branch works with Aboriginal communities on cultural heritage matters and participates in the Alberta government's First Nations' Consultation Initiative.

The Government of Alberta's First Nations Consultation Policy on Land Management and Resource Development and associated Guidelines state that Alberta will consult with First Nations where Land Management and Resource Development have the potential to negatively impact First Nations' Rights and Traditional Uses. Alberta Culture and Community Spirit consults, or delegates procedural aspects of First Nations consultation, when a known traditional use site of an historic resources nature has the potential to be threatened by a development project. This occurs as part of the Historical Resources Act regulatory process.

Traditional use sites of an historic resources nature that are known to Alberta Culture and Community Spirit appear on the Listing of Historic Resources as a generalized legal land description. This informs developers if their proposed project has the potential to impact an historic resource without revealing the specific location and information about the traditional use site.

Alberta Culture and Community Spirit also recognizes the benefit of working collaboratively with Aboriginal communities on the promotion and preservation of Aboriginal cultural heritage sites and welcomes inquiries from communities who would like assistance in this regard.
