Archaeological Research Permit Management System

Archaeological survey in the boreal forestMost archaeological investigations in Alberta require an Archaeological Research Permit, issued by Alberta Culture under the Historical Resources Act and Archaeological and Palaeontological Research Permit Regulation.  The Archaeological Research Permit Management System maintains information on archaeological projects carried out for the purpose of locating, recovering, analyzing and interpreting archaeological resources.  Activities typically conducted under a permit involve surveying a physical land area, including its subsurface deposits, and controlled excavation to locate and recover archaeological resources.  Such activities may be conducted for research purposes or to determine and mitigate the impacts that proposed developments would have on archaeological resources.

Excavation of prehistoric campsiteThe Permit System contains information on the researcher (**), the project and the proposed development.  Researchers approved to hold archaeological permits in Alberta can apply using the Online Permitting and Clearance (OPaC) system.  Timely submission of site data forms, permit reports, artifact collections and field records are conditions of holding a permit.  Site data becomes part of the Alberta Archaeological Site Inventory.  Final reports are kept in the Archaeological Survey Permit Report Library, while objects and field records are housed at the Royal Alberta Museum or other public institutions.
