YOUTH CATEGORY

Jessica Cope    

Jessica Cope (Calgary)

Nominated by Katie Ayres, The Distress Centre

Jessica Cope is a volunteer on the Distress Centre Teen Line, providing peer support, information and referrals. A dedicated volunteer in her community for over nine years, Jessica has also been involved in Peer Support programs in both her junior and senior high schools and has helped organize seminars on topics, such as stress and implement programs like Operation Christmas Child in her high school. Cope is a role model for others in the distress centre, and volunteers in training often comment on the wealth of her knowledge, her non-judgmental teaching style and the confidence she inspires on those first few challenging shifts.

 

Kyle Darroch    

Kyle Darroch (Jasper)

Kyle Darroch is an active and regular volunteer for Family and Community Support Services, helping with community events such as community family dances and Santa's Anonymous packing and delivering. He is actively involved in youth prevention and support programs, initiating programs like "Coffee Talk," which is peer run and maintained. He was also instrumental in the formation of the Party Prevention/Safety Committee, which recently volunteered to clean up the park's creeks and youth party sites. The past year, Darroch sat as school council president and grad president. Kyle is recognized as a leader among his peers and has a deep passion for his community that shows in every aspect of his work.

Ashid Bahl    

Ashid Bahl (Calgary)

Nominated by Neta Sharma, For the Love of Children Society of Alberta

Ashid Bahl is the founder and president of For the Love of Children Society, which helps children who live in poverty, abuse and neglect and those who are homeless. He has helped thousands of special needs children and their families, refugees and new immigrants, the Calgary Immigrant Aid Society and many other non-profit organizations to improve the lives of others around the world. Bahl believes that everyone can make a difference, and all it takes is to care and do for others who are less fortunate.

 

John McGee    

John McGee (Edmonton)

Nominated by Sharon Read, Excell Society

John McGee has dedicated his life to volunteer activities in Edmonton, in Alberta and in Canada. Currently, he is Chair of Residential Development Steering Committee for Excel Society, Chair of the Edmonton Festival Marathon Society and a K-40 Member of the Kinsmen Club of Edmonton. However, McGee has been a dedicated volunteer for a number of agencies and organizations since 1973, including positions with the Edmonton World Half Marathon Championships Bid Committee, Grant MacEwan College, the Canadian Ski Association, and Boys and Girls Clubs of Edmonton. John is well known as a person with endless energy, incredible dedication and true commitment to making his community a better place to live.

Pauline Feniak    

Pauline Feniak (Warspite)

Nominated by Gary Smigerowsky, Smoky Lake County

In her years as a volunteer, Pauline Feniak has dedicated her time to a number of causes within her community, including the restoration of the Warspite Community Hall, the designation of Victoria Settlement National Historic Site of Canada and the restoration of the Waskatenau United Church. She also actively volunteers with her church and with local historical and community organizations. During the past year, Feniak has exceeded 2,000 hours of voluntary activities, and continues to be an active and dedicated leader in the community.

 

Evelyn Stall    

Evelyn Stall (Medicine Hat)

Nominated by Doug Heine and Sherry Tisnic, City of Medicine Hat

Evelyn Stall has been a volunteer for approximately 72 years. Currently, she is involved in many committees and organizations within her community, including the City of Medicine Hat Transit Advisory Committee, the Medicine Hat Police Service Restorative Justice Study Committee, the VIA Volunteer Centre, the Needs of the Elderly Planning Committee, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, the Canada Mental Health Association and City of Medicine Hat Senior Services. Evelyn is described as an individual with dauntless energy, determination, professionalism and a keen sense for the future.
